With 18 years in the IT industry, Anthony James has gone from an admirer of technology to a Founder, CEO, and influencer in the industry. His passion for people and his love of technology is what lead to his success today, and continues to drive him. Here are his three pieces of IT career advice.
What’s the best piece of IT career advice you have for those looking to future-proof their careers?
Understand the importance of continuous learning. Continuous learning is an indispensable tool for every industry, but especially IT. With consistent changes, new challenges, and new and better ways of doing things, the IT industry is one of the most dynamic fields there is. Although it’s natural to be somewhat resistant to change, learn to embrace it and find the best resources to ensure that you have access to new information to enhance your learning.
What’s the best IT career advice you’ve ever received?
No matter how much you learn, you still won’t know everything. No one knows everything, especially off the top of their head. Ask for help, look it up, or find a resource to fill your knowledge gap. Everyone wants to be an expert, but recognizing that you won’t ever know absolutely everything and asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.
Any specific thoughts or IT career advice from your own experience?
It sounds cliche, but IT is one of those fields where you have substantial options and the privilege to pick something you’re passionate about. If you love security, you can prevent hackings and data leaks. With a love for development and IT, you can merge the two and work in DevOps. The best decision I made was figuring out what I was good at and what I enjoyed most and pursued that relentlessly. When you pick the right part of IT for you, learning will be fun and come easily. In order to boost your career, following your passion is key in an ever-changing industry. This industry likes to look at the norm and challenge its assumptions. Learn to do the same and welcome it.
