One of our core values is to support others in their mission to learn and grow, and we could not do that without our amazing and dedicated Support team! Meet one of the team members, Patrick, below and get an inside look at how we support our students all over the world.

1. What do you do at Linux Academy?

I’m currently a Customer Support Specialist, which means I help everyone with everything! I receive customer tickets, emails, and social media requests as well as support our internal staff with any computer related issues or services. I’ve been here for about four months, and I can’t imagine going back.

2. What did you do before this?

Before this, I worked at Apple Inc for almost five years as a Genius in the University Park Village Apple Store in Fort Worth, and I was also a Computer Systems Analyst/Infrastructure and Security Engineer at Seed Company in Arlington, TX for four years. After that, I worked for Opsgility for 10 months before finally coming here. I wanted to come here for a number of reasons including team structure, being closer to home, benefits, and the mission to provide quality care to our students.

3. What do you like most about what you do?

I’m a support person through and through. I have a deep desire to help people. I’ve tried having a job where I sit to myself and don’t talk to anyone, but I was miserable! Helping others, teaching them new things, and hearing and seeing their reactions is something I want in my life, and I’m never going to stop loving it. I’ve been in some form of support role since I left college over 10 years ago and I don’t think I could do anything else and be happy.

4. What’s your favorite part of working at Linux Academy?

When a student replies back to my email with something like, “Yes it worked! Thank you so much! Linux Academy is the best!”

5. What are you currently learning?

Right now I’m learning how to balance everything going on in my life. Things get really crazy sometimes with three kids, a wife, and a job, so it takes some practice.

6. What do you like to do in your free time?

I play a lot of League of Legends, and I watch a lot of professional League of Legends as well as the Overwatch League. Other than that, I’m usually playing babies with my daughter or baseball with my son. My wife and I also have a pretty active Netflix addiction. We just finished “Grace and Frankie”, and it was great!

7. Favorite food?

Pizza.

8. Favorite quote and why?

“I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs.

This is my favorite quote because when I was 20 years old, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I was in my second year of college, on my way to getting a degree in music, when a friend showed me a Steve Jobs keynote speech, and I was hooked. Who was this guy who spoke so well and who was so good at teaching a 1000 person room how to use some crazy high-tech piece of technology? He became a hero of mine, and I swore one day I wanted to work for him, and thankfully, it happened! When I first got to Apple, he was still alive and very much a part of the day-to-day operations of the company. I loved getting company-wide emails from him with his signature. There was no one else I wanted to work for, and if he were still alive, I’d probably still be there. When I heard this quote during his Stanford commencement speech, I knew it was something I had to do with my own life. And sure enough, it’s worked, and it’s helped me lead a better life. I don’t just like the quote; it’s my motto for how I live my life. I’ve switched jobs because of it, I’ve stopped relationships because of it, and I’ve changed the way I treat my children because of it. Steve meant the world to me for over 10 years, and his lasting effect on me is to lead a better life and make a difference to those around me.

9. What’s something you’re really excited about right now?

It’s hard to make friends when you’re a parent of three, so I’ve joined a few online communities, and things have been great so far. Making new friends has always been exciting for me, so I’m having a great time with some new friends.

10. What do you like to collect?

I collect whatever crazy objects my kids bring me. Right now, it’s cool shaped rocks, snail shells, and picked flowers.

11. If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?

I would want to fly like Superman. I have several reoccurring dreams where I fly off, and the freedom I feel in my dreams always comes to a crashing halt when I wake up. So, I’d like to experience the same thing while awake for once.

12. You’re a new addition to the crayon box, what color would you be and why?

Blue because why not?

13. Teach us something we may not know in 10 sentences or less?

Turn it off and on again. Please! No, like really, turn it off and on again if you have problems with it. It doesn’t matter what “it” is or what problem you’re having. Just turn it off and back on. You would be shocked and stunned how often this works.

14. If you could interview one person (dead or alive), who would it be?

Steve Jobs. I never got the chance to meet him in person or talk to him directly, but man I would have given anything to spend just 5 minutes with him. I would ask him about how he balanced his job, his family, and their need to be around him. As much as I know about him though, he probably would have hated the fact I idolized him and refused the interview!

15. What’s one thing on your bucket list?

I want to go to Scotland and sit on the shores of Loch Ness, just in case I happen to maybe probably not see anything that looks like a dinosaur coming out of the water. Or just a floating log. Who knows? But I won’t know unless I go!

16. What’s your favorite part about supporting our students?

This is my entire reason for being here. If there were no students to help, there wouldn’t be a need for me to stay. If I’m not helping anyone, I’m not happy. I find happiness by making others happy, and this is the perfect place for that!
